Quick facts
What is Carcassonne?
Players collectively create the countryside around the fortified city of Carcassonne one square tile at a time. Roads connect to roads, fields to fields, and city walls to city walls, so the map grows differently in every game.
After placing a tile, a player may place one of their limited followers—commonly called meeples—onto a feature that is not already claimed. Completed roads, cities, and monasteries score during play, while farms and unfinished features are scored at the end.
How does it play?
- Draw one land tile. Take the next face-down tile and examine its roads, cities, fields, and possible monastery.
- Place it legally. Add the tile to the shared map so every touching edge continues the same type of landscape.
- Optionally place a meeple. Claim one feature on the tile you just played, provided that connected feature does not already contain another player's meeple.
- Score completed features. When a road, city, or monastery is completed, award its points and return the meeples on that feature to their owners.
- Finish the landscape. When the last tile is placed, score unfinished features and farms. The player with the most points wins.
Why you might like it
- A three-step turn is easy to learn, but the shared map creates meaningful tactical choices.
- The landscape becomes a unique visual record of the game everyone just played.
- Players can focus on peaceful building, direct competition, or a mixture of both.
Who is it best for?
Carcassonne is best for families, couples, new hobby gamers, and strategy players who enjoy spatial puzzles. The base rules are approachable, while farms and contested features add depth for players who want it. Two-player games are especially focused, but larger groups create a lively shared map.

Frequently asked questions
What is a meeple?
A meeple is the wooden follower piece used to claim roads, cities, monasteries, and fields and to track points.
Can I place a meeple on a feature someone else already controls?
Not directly. A connected feature that already contains any meeple cannot receive a new one, although separate features may later be joined together.
Do I need an expansion?
No. The current base game is complete and also includes The River and The Abbot as optional mini-expansions.
Are farms required for a first game?
Farms are part of the standard scoring, but many teachers explain them after the basic tile and meeple rules so new players can learn in stages.
