What is Cribbage?
Cribbage uses a standard 52-card deck and a scoring board with pegs. Players score during card play and again by counting combinations in their hands. Fifteens, pairs, runs, and other combinations all matter, and the first player to reach 121 points wins.
How does it play?
- Deal and build the crib. Each player receives six cards and contributes two cards to a separate hand called the crib, which belongs to the dealer.
- Reveal the starter. A cut card becomes the starter and may help form combinations during hand scoring.
- Play cards toward 31. Players alternate cards without letting the running total exceed 31, scoring for totals and combinations along the way.
- Count the hands. Each player scores their four-card hand with the starter, then the dealer scores the crib. Move the pegs and begin the next deal.

Is Cribbage only for two players?
Two-player cribbage is the standard form described here, but established three- and four-player variations also exist.
Why does the board have pegs?
The pegs track points as players move toward 121. Using two pegs per player makes the previous score easy to see and helps prevent mistakes.
Is Cribbage difficult to learn?
The turn structure is manageable, but the scoring combinations take practice. A reference card and one guided hand are usually enough to get started.
